Project Chimera: Soldiers by Design

Project Chimera began with a simple military problem: soldiers leave.

They retire. Some transfer. Others die in combat. But sooner or later, everyone ages and there is a shelf-life for active duty. However, many more complete their enlistments and take their years of expensive training and experience with them.

Brigadier General Akuna believed he had a solution.

Instead of continually replacing experienced personnel, Project Chimera sought to create soldiers specifically engineered for military service. The result was a new form of life known as Lupus Canina Sapiens: genetically engineered canine-human hybrids. But they were specifically manipulated to enhance their strength, endurance, intelligence, heightened senses, and long-term military service.

They became known simply as Chimeras or the Dog-Soldiers.

More Than Super-Soldiers

Calling them super-soldiers barely explains what Project Chimera produced.

The Chimeras are not remote-controlled weapons or animals trained to follow simple commands. They can reason, learn, adapt, communicate, understand military structure, and make decisions under pressure. Also, they receive training, responsibilities, and their own military rank system.

The earliest Chimera operators introduced in The Book of Daniel are Senior Master Alpha Blitz and Master Alpha Wolfgar.

The contrast between them demonstrates how varied the program has become. Blitz combines speed, perception, tactical reasoning, and rapid threat response. Wolfgar brings tremendous physical size and strength as well as presence while remaining capable of surprising speed, stealth, and discipline.

Both are capable soldiers, not pets or mascots. That distinction becomes increasingly important.

Soldiers by Design

Project Chimera was created to solve a manpower problem. Akuna saw decades of training, experience, and military investment disappearing every time a veteran left the service. Since that is the reality of an all-volunteer military.

So engineering soldiers seemed like the perfect solution.

But creating sentient life introduces questions far larger than military readiness.

Genetics can influence strength, intelligence, senses, physical form, and even a reasonable expectation of function. However, that does not necessarily mean the engineers control what the creation ultimately becomes. Which then leaves even more uncomfortable questions surrounding their beings.

The Chimeras begin as products of laboratories, genetic engineering, and classified military planning. But their actions gradually force the people in close proximity to confront much harder questions. Are they government property? Weapons? Experiments? Or, people?

Project Chimera: Soldiers or Slaves?

The answer becomes increasingly difficult to ignore. As Chimeras demonstrate loyalty, courage, independent judgment, sacrifice, friendships, and a willingness to fight for people who do not always consider them to have any rights. Because they are definitively not human, despite sharing half of their DNA with humanity.

Project Chimera was intended to build better soldiers that never leave. But it may have created something that the geneticist never fully understood.
